A night of heroes: fishermen awards
Just saw this in the Radio Times (the UK’s most popular TV Listings magazine):
Regular readers might be able to guess my thoughts on this but for now I’d just like to take a moment to recognise the heorism of our boys battling around the world but often neglected: the fishermen. According to this article fishermen top the list of the most dangerous jobs out there with 118 deaths per 100,000, compared to 111 per 100,000 for military servicemen.
So let’s take a moment to appreciate those who are risking their lives to provide you with a tasty variety of fish to purchase at any local retail outlet. You won’t see fishermen honored on the front pages of the Guardian when one dies, you won’t hear people talk of them as heroes, sacrificing their lives and you certainly won’t see Simon Cowell attending a star studded evening of propaganda for them entitled “a night of heroes.” Oh, and fishermen aren’t making us less safe by creating new enemies around the world. They aren’t inciting hatred from people in Afghanistan and Iraq and motivating a new generation of terrorists by bombing lands they have no business in being in.No fishermen are simply providing what people in the market want, and are asking nothing more in return than the market value of their goods. They risk their lives day in day out and don’t expect to be revered as heroes, but they are.
And while we’re at it let’s give a shout out to the Timber Workers, the Farmers and the Construction Workers who all die in greater numbers than the police, and without once being recognised for their “courageous self-sacrifice”.
These are our real public servants. And I encourage you all to spare a thought for them as you read this site.
